Egypt renews its position against calls to displace Palestinians from Gaza

Division, debate and threats of withdrawal from the fragile agreement between Israel and Hamas and calls demanding the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza characterise Israel. Although these calls have been rejected to date, some calls come from the circle of US President Trump under the pretext of reconstructing Gaza.

Although this argument has gone on for months, it has been invalidated by Gazans who have insisted on returning to the ruins of their homes.

The people of Gaza have not only paid the price of war, but they have also spoiled the plan to remove all Palestinians from Gaza. and their refusal to leave their land. In fact, the residents of Gaza prefer to return to the ruins of their homes that were destroyed by the Israeli army rather than leave temporarily or permanently. If they were to do so, this would be a repeat of the tragedy of the 1948 Nakba.

There are many challenges in the region, and they have called into questions the red lines in Syria, Lebanon and Iran. These red lines were confirmed by the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader in the Revolutionary Guard, Ali Saeedi, who said that Iran has three red lines in Syria: the unity of Syria, the survival of Bashar al-Assad, and the defense of Shiite holy sites in Syria and Iraq. Hezbollah’s presence in Lebanon is also among the red lines that have been demolished by the current transformation in the region.

Moreover, it is likely that the challenges ahead for the region will become greater. There are many unknowns however given the Donald Trump has become US president.

Trump is making statements that neighbouring Arab countries should receive the people of Gaza until Gaza is rebuilt, demands that Egypt, Jordan and all other Arab countries, have rejected. The plan has also been rejected by the Palestinians who have refused to leave Gaza. Moreover, Egypt’s closing of the Rafah Crossing was done to protect the Palestinians from a diabolical plan that was clearly initiated on October 7, 2023.

The people of Gaza have confirmed that Egypt knew about the displacement plan but rejected it. Egypt still believes in a two-state solution and hence the creation of a Palestinian state.  After occupying Syria, there is another plan by the US to displace the Palestinians there in agreement with the Israeli occupiers.

Concluding the Israel-Hamas agreement

US President Donald Trump played a role in concluding the recent agreement to stop the war, pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more than former President Joe Biden did. However, Trump also supports Israel and has agreed to provide weapons to Israel that Biden had stopped. Trump also agrees with the policy of “displacement”, adopting the demands of the Israeli lobby in the Republican Party.

All this is happening even though these plans have failed for decades. Moreover, 143 countries in the United Nations have announced their recognition of the Palestinian state. This makes the repetition of the displacement scenario very dangerous and could blow up the region.

Since the beginning of the war, Egypt has always rejected the displacement of the Palestinian people, while still emphasising the importance of its national security. Egypt also seeks Palestinian reconciliation. It always stresses the need to promote reconciliation between Palestinian groups and factions and to reject differences between these factions, especially at the present time and in light of what Cairo describes as Israeli obstacles and plans to separate Gaza from the West Bank.

However, there are some within Palestine who see reconciliation as a loss. Egypt's policy is balanced in light of the unrest and conflicts over its western, southern and eastern borders and their economic repercussions.
