Amid widespread controversy and political uproar, Egyptian authorities have denied reports circulated by media outlets and social media accounts claiming that the German-flagged ship “Kathrin” carrying explosives destined for Israel docked at the Port of Alexandria. The ship, previously rejected by several countries, has raised questions about its route and the purpose of its cargo.
The story centers around the ship Kathrin, which has sparked international debate over accusations that it was transporting explosive materials to support Israeli military operations in Gaza. Reports published by websites claimed that the ship docked in Alexandria and offloaded its cargo, which was allegedly transferred to another vessel, TransBay, headed to the Israeli port of Ashdod.
In response, the Egyptian military spokesperson categorically denied these claims, stating that Egypt does not provide any support to Israel's military operations. He emphasized that the Egyptian Armed Forces are the “shield and sword of the nation,” protecting its resources and defending its people. The spokesperson urged caution in disseminating unverified information, describing such reports as coming from “suspicious accounts.”
Egypt’s Ministry of Transport also issued a statement clarifying that Kathrin, a German-flagged ship owned by an international company, had docked at the Port of Alexandria to unload cargo designated for the Ministry of Military Production. The ministry added that the ship submitted an official request to depart for Turkey’s Port of Haydarpaşa to continue its journey, affirming that all procedures were conducted in accordance with Egyptian and international laws.
A senior Egyptian official dismissed the allegations as "lies aimed at tarnishing Egypt’s historic role in supporting the Palestinian cause." He reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering commitment to Palestinian rights and rejected any accusations contrary to this stance.
The incident has garnered international attention, with the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement calling for an independent investigation into Kathrin’s route and potential involvement in transporting military supplies allegedly used to commit “war crimes” against Palestinians. The movement praised other nations, including Malta, Namibia, and Angola, for denying entry to the ship.
BDS has also called for increased public pressure to hold involved parties accountable and to prevent Egyptian waters and ports from facilitating any Israeli military activity.
“The deadly cargo believed to be on board the MV Kathrin must not reach Israel as there is a clear risk that such cargo would contribute to the commission of war crimes against Palestinian civilians,” said Nataša Posel, head of Amnesty International Slovenia.
These developments come as international pressure mounts on Israel to halt its genocide in Gaza amid accusations of using imported weaponry to commit severe violations of international humanitarian law. The incident also underscores the challenges Egypt faces in balancing its international obligations with its regional commitments.
While Egyptian officials continue to refute the allegations, activists and human rights organizations are demanding greater transparency regarding the ship’s cargo and journey. There are growing calls for broader investigations involving all parties linked to the controversy.
The controversy surrounding Kathrin underscores the complexity of balancing national interests, regional commitments, and international scrutiny. While Egypt firmly denies any involvement in facilitating military operations, the incident highlights the growing need for transparency and adherence to international norms. As investigations and public pressure continue to mount, all eyes remain on how this situation will unfold in the coming weeks.
