The Role of the Middle East in the US-China Race to AI Supremacy

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been revolutionizing the world. AI has become a game changer in reshaping global power, and therefore, the competition for AI supremacy has taken center stage in international relations. While the United States and China have traditionally been at the forefront of the technological race, we are now witnessing a dynamic shift.

The Middle East is making significant progress in artificial intelligence, particularly in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia. With their strategic location between these two technologically advanced superpowers and huge investments in AI, the Middle East is capturing global attention and playing an important role in this exciting new chapter of technological development.

Understanding AI Supremacy

Do you know that AI supremacy is more than just a buzzword; it’s not just about technology. It is the nation's ability to maintain a leading edge in AI technologies, from foundational research and the development of innovative AI products to their applications in a country’s development.

Imagine a world where the most advanced artificial intelligence shapes everything from education and healthcare to national defense. Understanding these things helps us look into the future of global power relations, where technological dominance can lead to economic and geopolitical influence.

UAE's AI Initiatives

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is becoming a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by integrating intelligence across various sectors. In 2017, the country launched the UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy, aiming to be a global leader in AI by 2031

The UAE is proactively forming partnerships with global technology firms to develop advanced AI solutions. One of the landmark collaborations is between Microsoft and G42, an Abu Dhabi-based AI and cloud computing firm. Using Microsoft’s cloud technology and G42’s local expertise, they are improving healthcare, smart city infrastructure, and education to make life better for UAE residents, ultimately aiming to improve the quality of life for UAE residents.

In addition to this, both Huawei and Alibaba have been actively involved in the Middle East, showcasing their latest innovations at events like GITEX Global in Dubai. They are working on various projects in AI, Internet of Things, and cloud technology, further demonstrating the UAE’s commitment to becoming a global AI hub.

Moreover, The UAE's investment in semiconductors shows its commitment to reducing dependency on foreign technology. By investing in chip-making ventures, Abu Dhabi is showcasing its commitment to achieve long-term technological self-sufficiency, which supports its AI goals. The UAE's focus is on developing a local tech ecosystem to encourage innovation and establish the nation as a significant player in the global AI field.

Saudi Arabia's AI Strategy

Saudi Arabia is also moving rapidly and investing heavily to become a major AI powerhouse both regionally and globally. As part of its ambitious Vision 2030 plan, Saudi Arabia aims to diversify its economy, reduce its dependency on oil, and build a vibrant economy by 2030 through extensive initiatives to harness AI across various sectors. The Kingdom plans to create a $40 billion AI investment fund aimed at developing a robust framework that will drive AI innovation across various sectors.

Saudi Arabia to become more efficient and innovative is investing in artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity, streamline operations, and promote sustainable economic growth.

Additionally, To support these efforts, Saudi Arabia is focusing on developing local talent in AI. The Kingdom is partnering with universities and global tech companies to create education and training programs. These initiatives aim to build a skilled workforce that can drive innovation and support the country's long-term AI goals. This strategy highlights the importance of technology not only for economic growth but also for transforming the job market and promoting a culture of innovation.
